Wisdom Tooth Extractions

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are located in the very back of your mouth and are the last teeth to erupt as you develop. They are a third set of molars and if they grow straight, they do not need to be extracted, but this is typically not the case. Wisdom teeth that do not grow properly can cause a wide range of problems:

  • Infection: One of the most common issues with impacted wisdom teeth is infection. When your mouth does not have enough room for the teeth to properly erupt, this causes irritation to tissues and can lead to painful, swollen infections.
  • Crowding: If you do not have your wisdom teeth removed, crowding can develop. This affects your front teeth and can cause issues with your smile, especially if you had orthodontic treatment before.
  • Cyst Formation: Impacted wisdom teeth can cause non-infectious diseases to form, such as cysts. Cysts can form inside your mandible and grow in size, which can destroy the mandible and other teeth, too.
  • Damage to surrounding teeth: As your wisdom teeth cause crowding, damage to surrounding teeth is probable, too. Other teeth will not receive the cleaning necessary to stay healthy, which can cause periodontal disease, decay and bone loss.

Today’s new findings in dentistry estimate that nearly 85% of all wisdom teeth will eventually need to be extracted. Dr. Clinton Falk in San Antonio has many years of experience in properly removing wisdom teeth to help preserve your beautiful smile and keep you healthy.
